Running Smarter: Three Races
Since my foot broke and I had to take a break (every runner’s nightmare!) I decided to run more wisely. The team I had been on was now gone, but I felt better about running than I had in a couple of years.
I had felt overtrained, slower, and injured. I lost the joy I’ve always had in running. The injury and timing were fortuitous. It made me stop, reevaluate, and start over. Right now I’m up to 4 miles (building to 6), doing a lot of heart rate training, feeling healthy, easing my foot back into the game, and running at least a minute a mile slower than “normal”. That’s hard and it sucks. Not going to lie. But I’m finding the joy in running again so it’s worth it. I’m on a different team that I really, really love with the best coaches. My first race back was the Shamrock Shuffle the weekend before St Patrick’s Day. I ran a 25:51.
My next race was Reno 5000 1st in the series of 3. I won 2nd in my age division for the 5K with a time of 27:16. This is a great race. I don’t know how many years I’ve been running it although I’ve done the half marathon in the past.The third 5K was the Race to end Domestic Violence. I won two bottles of wine and first in my age division for the 5K with a time of 27:24. This was a small, really fun race. Sarah (my coach) made a surprise visit on the course and I saw her at the finish which was awesome!! 4 kids came with me and ran the half-mile. I love having them there. It makes a world of difference to hear them cheering.
Overall, my time is consistent and I”m happy to be healthy! Next up is training for 10K’s and continuing my journey. My speed will come with mileage and consistency. It’s a different mindset to be laid back for a season but a good one and much needed. I’ve learned so much about running smarter.
