How to “Date Night” & The Rules to Follow

Date night is nearly non-negotiable. It’s almost always on Saturday night, however, we’ve been known to get a little crazy and go on Sunday. Dane and I trade weeks. I plan one, he plans the next.

So here’s how we “date night”. And we have a few rules we follow. No being whiny about what the other person chooses. No relationship discussions — this is the time to build each other up, not complain. Our favorite thing to do is to eat dinner. Well, MY favorite thing. I like to get dinner done for the kids — something easy — and go sit and visit. Nothing to cook and clean up. Just relaxing. We try to pair food with an activity. Walking the marina, a movie, etc… Date night is how we regroup and reconnect. It’s time away from work, home, kids, stress. everything. It’s just US. It’s one way we balance our relationship and gear up for the next week. It wasn’t always a priority like it is now. Just like minimizing was Dane’s idea, date night was mine.

It’s so easy to let anything and everything get in the way of going because it isn’t necessary like going to work, or doctors appointments. We were good about it for a while, then off and on. The kids started to notice that we weren’t going regularly and started talking about it. “You guys need to go”, “Date night is important”, “why aren’t you going on a date?”, etc…. We had shown our kids the value of date night but then were inconsistent. I love continuing to date — usually, we get ready and look nicer for each other. It’s something to look forward to. I still get giddy when it’s Dane’s time to plan.

There was one time we finally got out the door — past the kid’s issues, past making dinner, past anyone being sick, past feeling tired and unmotivated….. We walked out and left. It was awesome and at that moment we realized how important it is to us. How much we need it, appreciate each other and reconnected so it became absolute. Dating Dane reminds me of everything I love about him. Dating is how this whole thing started after all.
