Challenge Time — The 5 Things Challenge
It’s challenge time. I’m challenging myself to work on 5 things. These have to be things that I’m struggling getting accomplished, or are important to me. Life tends to get in the way and we all seem to unintentionally get sidetracked. I don’t always spend my time doing what I want. Sometimes I spend it doing things I need to do (like working and sleeping), or time that’s not productive (like too much social media). With time being finite, it’s important to me to spend it on what’s important.
- Spending more time with my family. Dane and I have both worked a lot in the last couple of months. Although that’s sometimes necessary — and we both enjoy our jobs — it can have a negative impact on the family. Now that some of the summer business is winding down (no more farmers markets) I’ll have a more “normal” schedule. Chris will also be able to cut back. With him working 70+ hours some weeks (and never less than 55) and me putting in over 50, the kids will be glad that we’re around more. We have passes to 6 Flags that we need to get used and we didn’t go to the lake once this summer. The family should never be on the back-burner. Somehow, there needs to be more time for them. They are grown and gone in a millisecond and I want to cherish it. 7 kids in high school means in 3 years all 7 will be 18 and graduated. They are too important to miss.
- Training. Fortunately, I found a running group that meets twice a week at 5 am. That means I can get some of my running in without it taking time during the day or after work when it cuts into time with the family. I’ve also gone back to Sunday morning runs at Reno Running Company and that’s great for my long run. I also have two evening options and Saturday mornings when I can. The kids have the option of coming with me on one evening and Sunday, but I’m usually home when they’re just waking up.
- Minimizing. It’s not done yet. The house is pretty much there, but our storage items and garage could be reduced (they’ve gotten SO much better!). Mostly I’m still figuring out my clothes and shoes. I’m not good at doing the seasonal capsule wardrobes and maybe I won’t ever be, but I know I’m not there yet. I have some ideas though. I’ll keep you posted.
- School. I enrolled due to my boss encouraging me. She’s great and I adore her, so I listened. I’m on the fence on if it’s a great idea so I’ll see how this semester goes. Since I committed, I need to follow through. It’s not an enormous amount of time, but it’s a priority. My issue is figuring out when is the best time to utilize to study. So far, so good.
- Reading. I’ve downloaded books and podcasts that I really want to read and listen to. I dislike having so little time that I don’t relax and read. I used to do that so much more. The great thing about devices is that I have everything portable and on my kindle so it’s available when I am — even if it’s a few minutes here and there.
This 5 Things Challenge is a great to have an opportunity to assess life and make tweaks. We are very blessed to have this ability. There are really no excuses for not doing what’s important — we are generally the problem when it comes to life being too busy. Get out there and do what you love!
